A Walk on the Wild Side

On May 12, I took a break from farm chores and hiked through the woods before the predicted rains began. Well, almost. I did get a little wet. Here are some of the wild things I saw:

high flying geese

vetch

lots of Fringecups

Fringecup, Tellima grandiflora

Large-leaved Avens, Geum macrophyllum

Red Columbine, Aquilegia formosa

Bleeding Hearts,

Western Buttercup, Ranunculus occidentalis

Piggy-back Plant, Tolmiea menziesii

Artist's Conk, Ganoderma applanatum

Broad-leaved Bluebells, Mertensia platyphylla

Pacific Waterleaf, Hydrophyllum tenuipes

American Kestrel, male

American Kestrel, female, waiting for food delivery
Nothing soothes my soul more than a walk on the wild side.

Jellyfish Clouds

Some weirdly beautiful clouds appeared in the sky on May 9. I took lots of photos and later learned they were called Jellyfish Clouds. They are really a type of altocumulus clouds, but they look like jellyfish with their tentacles dangling downward. The tentacles are really virga, precipitation in drier area that evaporates before hitting the ground. This creates the wispy cloud trail that extends from the main cloud before ceasing at the level in the atmosphere where the evaporation is complete.

I couldn't decide which photos to keep so I kept them all...

Mother's Day During a Pandemic

Some of us are still honoring the stay at home recommendations. But I suspect others are not, Johnny being one of them. Yesterday and today, Mother's Day, he's up at the neighbors' helping take out the old and install a new shower. I hope he's not harboring the virus... or acquiring it.

I have plenty to do without venturing forth. And I do occasionally have friends come to the farm for drive-by baby goat viewings. I get to talk to them at a distance as I entice goats into view with buckets of grain.

No zoom meetings anymore as our computer connection is very sporadic. And our land line phone has been dead for days with no repair coming until maybe tomorrow (Monday, May 10).  Our cell phone has limited range here on the farm and is hard to hear over but I did get to connect with both sons and their families this morning. It's so nice to hear their voices. I hope all those moms in assisted living places where no visitors are allowed get long phone calls today from their kids.

It's been hot here the last two days but it's supposed to rain for a couple weeks starting tomorrow so I mowed the arboretum paths today. It's too hot to continue the flower bed weeding I have been working on for days. The flowers are having to grow very tall to be seen over the grass. Johnny has been working on hay equipment: rake (ours), mower (borrowed from neighbor), and baler (given to us by a friend who no longer needs it).

Although I've not been keeping up with the jungle room maintenance, the Amaryllis and Epiphyllums (jungle cactus or whatever they really are) don't seem to care. They are blooming like crazy, mostly in shades of red, making the jungle room look like Christmas. In May.

Happy Christmas in May!  Happy Mother's Day!
